It's clear from the subtitle of this work that there is some history behind its original production. The explanation of this is given by the author in his Preface and I can do no better than to quote that preface here:

There is extant a copy of A History of the County of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, by the Rev. J. R. Campbell, published in 1876, where, beneath the printed testimonial preceding its title page, occur these words over the date of Sept.2, 1885 :

When this book was first offered to the public, I somewhat hastily passed over its pages; and then, and at other times since, it seemed to me strange that so many inaccuracies should have escaped the critical notice of the gentlemen whose names are attached to the above testimonial. But having more carefully examined the book within the past week, I have taken the liberty of making some marginal notes where it seemed to be of some importance that the errors in the text should be corrected.

A few months afterward, a second examination of the book led to additional notes, which at length extended so far beyond the capacity of the margins of its pages and other blank spaces as to reach a volume nearly as large as the contents of the book they were reviewing; and toward the end of December, 1885, the Author concluded that it was his duty in some measure to repair the errors of omission and commission to which his notes referred, by the publication of this book. .........

At first it might seem slightly embarrassing to have two authors bickering over the history of an area but in fact we are fortunate that these two scholars were dedicated enough, and cared enough, to give us the full benefit of their researches and knowledge to ensure that the information they passed on was as accurate as possible. Of course it gives us the inconvenience of having to read two books instead of one but look at the greater breadth of knowledge that we gain. You can find the History of the County of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, by the Rev. J. R. Campbell in our catalogue by clicking the following link CA0441.

To this end we not only offer a reproduction of both individual books but we also offer a “set on CD” including both digital book reproductions, but related through a common “index” so the “hits” for your search terms in BOTH books are offered for your inspection see CatNo. CA0444.

George Stayley Brown's book follows the logical outline of a history of a particular area (for other than First Nations races), starting with its discovery by Europeans and proceeding chronologically through the years until it reaches a period close to that of its publication in 1888. In a partial defense of the European bias of this approach I should also say that the author deals with the early history of the area in some detail and does not gloss over the early interaction of the first Nations peoples and the settlers as is so often the case. In fact an attention to detail characterizes the whole of this book giving, where it can, the actual names and land grants of the early pioneers as well as those instrumental in settling the early centres of population. This was, also an important area for the resettlement of the ousted Empire Loyalists from the forming USA and Brown gives plenty of information about the circumstances of these people's extradition and the lives they started to build for themselves in Nova Scotia. In some cases the genealogical records of some families will be found as will the significant military history of what was a fairly turbulent area.

All in all this is a great book for anyone who wants to know about the formation, and early history, of this important maritime area. While this maritime history has not been mentioned previously it is not because it is lacking, in fact extracts from this book have been included in our Compendium of Yarmouth Shipping, CA0158, a CD we believe holds the most complete maritime history of this once World Class shipping centre.
