So you've heard of Police Gazettes? But just what are they? These were weekly publications which were distributed among the Police Force, and included information on all sorts of happenings within the state of South Australia.

Far from being just a unique, useful and extremely fascinating resource for local, family and social historians, these Police Gazettes contain details and information that can not be found anywhere else. As well as listing those in the police force with promotions, resignations, commendations etc, you will find information on courts lists, arson, murders, deserters, lists of those arrested and discharged, warrants issued, escaped prisoners, missing persons, details of lost and stolen items (and from whom), apprehensions and more. Notices from police gazettes from other states are also often included.

Example entry taken from the 22 February 1905 issue:

Missing Friends

Information is requested at the instance of Sandford and Limbert, solicitors, Adelaide, as the the present wherabouts of Charles Douglas Singer, who is entitled to a share under the will of his father (Charles Douglas Singer), formerly of Middlesex, England, and last of Herts. England. Missing friend is supposed to have shipped to Australia about the year 1874, in company with a Mr. Meallin (Meelin), who, after his arrival appears to have filled the position of Government school teacher at Swan River for some time, and was last heard of in Silverton, New South Wales, in 1885. It is expected that Meallin, if found, will be able to furnish information concerning the whereabouts of Singer the younger. - (C.270).
