Title continues: with a Biographical and Genealogical Appendix.

Barrington Township lies in the southernmost corner of Nova Scotia which made it a geographically attractive landfall target for vessels approaching from the Atlantic, as well as for travelers sailing north from the initial 13 colonies. Add to that a naturally sheltered harbor and it is no surprise that Barrington is the backdrop to a great deal of the early colonial history of Canada. Starting with Champlain’s first anchoring in Sable Bay in 1604, Barrington later saw the establishment of the early French settlements, soon followed by British forces, taking advantage of their poor defenses to evict the “French” (Acadian) settlers to make room for “Loyal” settlers including those moving north from the original colonies.

In its own way, this very book also has tumultuous beginnings. It originated in the private research notes of a Professor Arnold Doane, where it remained until his death in 1911. At that point the research notes might have vanished into some dusty archive or another were it not for Edwin Crowell, who took up the challenge of cross-checking and organizing Doane’s notes, all the while extending the material which became the contents of this book. So, although the authorship of this book is recorded as Edwin Crowell’s it would probably be more valid to attribute it to both of them, jointly. In fact the only part of the book which appears as mostly the work of Crowell are the Biographical & Genealogical lists of many of the inhabitants in Barrington township. These list entries also frequently include reference to the individual’s geographical location, either as a “Land Grantee” allocation (resulting from the various township plans) or from subsequent property sales. Even in this list, however, Crowell states he borrowed from Doane’s notes for some of his data.

Leaving aside the question of attribution, what we can say is that the information in this book is more likely to be accurate by virtue of the expert cross checking which has gone into it. The main body of the book is laid out, mainly chronologically with later paragraphs “filling in” on specific subjects such as Religion, Social Services and Maritime Issues, and includes a map which is claimed to be a corrected version of the commonly available map of the time. Most of the latter third of the pages are made up of a series of appendices, which include a few articles and “papers” penned by Pro. Doane, but it is mainly occupied by an alphabetical collection of “Biography and Genealogy.” (See list below.)

There is no obvious reason for the choice of Families included in the list, except that they appear to be amongst the most prolific in the period when the book was under construction. Prof. Doane’s contributions to the list were mainly, perhaps all, early settlers and land “grantees”. Don’t forget also that each family name recorded also, identified parents, sometimes grand parents and usually several tiers of off-spring, thus introducing hundreds of “married-in” individual with family names not mentioned in any index.

Please, however, don’t get the impression that the appendix is the only source of personal data in the book. Within the preceding 2/3 of the book many, many names of residents and visitors are recorded in reference to notable events which are all a part of this ancient township’s fascinating history.

Family Names in APPENDIX of BIOGRAPHIES & GENEALOGIES.

(Lower case names are “interpreted” from text and MAY NOT be independent Family groups. “Several” indicates a family description with limited discussion of individuals.)
