The story starts as they leave England in May 1837, and describes their journey out, life on Kangaroo Island until they moved to the main land in 1840, and their life in Adelaide, including descriptions of the family's first Australian dinner party, a wedding, Port Adelaide, a visit to Klemzig, and a picnic at Mount Lofty.

 

Letters by the author's sister are included in the last half of the book as well as some original poems, giving even more insight into life at this time.
