Content Description: This paper examines the influence the war of 1812 had in giving the inhabitants of those colonies of N. America which remained loyal to Britain, a group identity as Canadians. It discusses the influence this had on drawing the largely unexplored territories west of the great lakes into a coalition with the existing “eastern” colonies to form the Confederation and finally the Dominion of Canada. It also notes the effect of the western Selkirk settlements.
