Holden, JAMES, Mayor of Fitzroy, was born in May, 1837, at Larne, County Antrim, Ireland. He received his education at private schools, and in April, 1852, together with his parents, landed in Melbourne. About two years after arrival in Australia, Mr. Holden went to the goldfields with his brother, and dug without success for five years. Tired of a miner's life, he returned to Melbourne, and for two years worked with his father in the building-trade. His next departure was to New Zealand, where he worked for two years with such good results that he was able to return to Melbourne, marry, and commence business on his own account. Success attended his efforts, and in 1878 he was elected councillor for the municipality of Fitzroy by the largest number of votes ever recorded; and after serving the usual term—three years—was again returned by an overwhelming majority. In 1881, Mr. Holden was elected Mayor of the city of Fitzroy by an unanimous vote. Married, in 1865, Mary Ann, daughter of Charles Meates, Esq., of London; issue, one daughter.
