Directories and almanacs are a valuable source of information for local, family and social historians as well as researchers in other fields of history. They are an extremely useful tool for establishing when and where a person lived. However this is just a starting point. The Pugh's Queensland directories have been published annually since 1858. And as Queensland and its population grew, so did the size of the directories.
The 1885 edition has over 650 pages, and covers Brisbane city and suburbs, and Queensland country. This would have been a valuable guide at the time, with information such as a calendar of events, committee lists, governors, telegraph, postal, shipping and railway information, tariffs and stamp duties, tide tables and meteorological information. Checking directories and almanacs is useful to understand what life was like, and what services were available in any region at the time. Understanding the social history and events of the time, is just as important as finding the names and dates.
A feature of this year is the "Men of the Time" section - biographies of prominent Queenslanders.
