A unique and valuable record, the New South Wales Police Gazettes were issued once a week, with information on 'cases of felony and misdemeanors together with description of offenders, and every particular which may lead to their apprehension' - and much more.

 

They contain an enormous amount of information which cannot be found elsewhere. Apart from any changes within the police force which are all listed, information is also given on housebreak-ins, robberies, arson, murders, lost horses and cattle, deserters from wives and families and also deserters from service, missing friends, escaped prisoners, reports on those released. Notices from interstate police gazettes are quite often included.

A unique feature of this 1878 volume are the lists of publicans' (and other) licences. They list the licencee's name, address and name of the hotel.

Example entry taken from the 18 December 1878 issue:

Felonies and Offences Not Otherwise Described

James Fowler is charged on warrant, with embezzling £200 from the London Chartered Bank, Talbot, on the 26th October last. Description:- Scotch, 54 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, sallow complexion, thin features, thin build, careworn appearance, weak sight, gray hair, gray whiskers, which he continually alters by shaving, gray moustache cut square; excitable temperament. He was sometime ago a patient in the Bathurst Hospital, and now adopts the name James Ross. - O.7459. 10th December, 1878. Since arrested in Bega.
