Written by author Clara Dennis, in the 1930’s decade, this book falls into the “travel-literature” genre of the commercial publishing world, but such a description fails to do justice to Nova Scotia born Clara’s gift for bringing her chosen locations in Cape Breton to life with insights into local culture and 18 photographs which she herself took while gathering “research” materials.

Quoting from a bio. of Clara’s decision to become an author she says, “Then and there was born the resolution to seek and find Nova Scotia. I would travel over her highways and byways. I would know her cities, her towns, her villages. I would visit the remote and but little frequented islands of her coast. I would talk with the men, women and children I would meet. This book, her third and last, contains 342 numbered pages, and is divided into 17 chapters. Each chapter centres attention on one of the well known areas of the Island, mostly its cities and towns. As well as paying attention to the (then) current situation Clara also delves into the defining history of the area, reporting local legend and folk-law and any “juicy” local stories she could find.
