Each place in Essex is described in great detail, with lists of private residents and a commercial directory listing people with trades. Also included is a Court directory with an alphabetical list of private residents and their addresses which will prove *immensely* useful to those researching the census. There is also a full trades directory with alphabetical lists of occupations and the names of the people with those trades. 

They grew out of the earlier Post Office Directories and their content expanded over the years as they became better established and recognised.
